Applying an equity lens to budget cuts to reduce impact on vulnerable communities
Budget cuts are one of many often unavoidable responses to fiscal crises. While the conventional approach tends to be “across-the-board” spending cuts, this method has the potential to disproportionately impact a city’s most vulnerable and at-risk populations. This What Works Cities City Budgeting for Equity & Recovery resource was developed in collaboration with the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and the City of Toledo. The resource explores how cities can adopt a more nuanced view to budget cuts in order to reduce the impact on disadvantaged parts of the community.
